Cape Elizabeth Land Trust Paddle

On Saturday September 21st I had the pleasure of spending the morning with folks from the Cape Elizabeth Land Trust. We met at the launch at 10:00 AM. After hauling boats and gear to the water (thank goodness for wheels) we had a fantastic morning paddling on beautiful Great Pond.  Prior to launching we spent a little time talking about boat design and learning correct paddling technique. We saw blue herons, kingfishers and turtles. It was a calm sunny day … Read More

Why Map & Compass

In our world of electronics, you may ask why Map & Compass…it is so…primitive!  The push of a button on a cell phone, GPS or PLB (personal locator beacon) is easy, convenient, more accurate, universal, no need to add or subtract declination…no need to think! While the world of electronics makes our lives easier, it does have its limitations. Tree cover, remote location, cost, and battery life, are the most common reasons our devices may fail. A basic base plate … Read More

Sebasticook Regional Land Trust Presents: Nancy Zane’s Favorite Local Paddles

As I sit and look out the window at the current blizzard (some news outlets report anywhere from 18 -24 inches of snow are possible), it is hard to imagine that the first day of spring is next week. Will I soon be able to put away my skis, and hop into my boat for a brand new season of paddling adventures? The tranquil, and sometime not so tranquil, waters of Maine’s lakes, rivers, and bays await. Where will this … Read More

North Star Adventures Trip Log: Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument

As a school teacher, one of the many perks of my job certainly includes February break (I teach Emergency Medical Services at Waldo County Technical School). Sometimes I’m not certain who is more excited for the break–teachers or the students.  The vacation week allows me to enjoy the beauty of the Maine winter, and plan extended visits to some of the more scenic spots our state has to offer. For this winter break, our group’s destination was Katahdin Woods and … Read More
