Basket Weaving and Wilderness Canoeing
July 18 @ 8:00 AM - July 20 @ 5:00 PM$350
Join us for a canoe and basket weaving expedition in the beautiful Grand Lake Stream region of Maine. We will gather materials as we are canoeing (cattails, pine needles, bark….) to create and weave into unique baskets. Creativity and experimentation are encouraged! We will explore a variety of materials, beautiful or mundane, that we can weave into our projects. Looking at our gathered materials we will discuss the properties of each and how to use them effectively in our creations. Basic basket weaving methods will be taught. Since we are using found materials each project will a unique and beautiful creation.
Because we can’t be sure what we’ll find, you may or may not come home with a finished basket, but you will have some tools and techniques to apply to future projects.
Artist Hanlon Kelley will join us for this canoeing journey. Hanlon grew up canoeing on the lakes of Northern Minnesota. The motion of paddling a canoe feels to her like being in sync with the universe. She discovered sea kayaking when she moved to Maine in 2010 and appreciates both canoeing and kayaking for their distinct advantages. She enjoys craft of all sorts, particularly basket-weaving. The creation of anything that is both beautiful and functional, especially when made from natural materials, is deeply fulfilling to her. Her other passions include star-gazing, birding, singing, and contra dancing.
Meals will be made from locally sourced ingredients and prepared in camp. Fresh produce, meats, fruits, breads and cheeses are abundant in Maine, be prepared for a outdoor culinary experience.
All paddling equipment, group camping gear, materials, permits, food and instruction are included.
