February 22, 2020 @ 9:00 AM - 2:00 PM$55
Introduction to Snowshoeing, Fernald’s Neck Preserve Loop, Beginner. Fernald’s Neck covers most of a peninsula that extends into the north end of Lake Megunticook . This easy hike is a great introduction to snowshoeing. There are many trail options, we can do as many as four miles or as little as two. The trail wanders through the pine and hardwood forests, and skirts the shore line of the lake with beautiful views of Maiden Cliff and the Camden Hills. It is mostly flat with rolling hills on the western side of the preserve. Several key features include Balance Rock (a huge boulder that is balancing precariously on the bedrock), the Great Bog, four miles of shoreline, and an abundance of natural fairy houses. If you are new to the area, have never been on snowshoes, or are a seasoned hiker this trip is for you. It is beautiful, peaceful, and mostly flat.
The preserve is managed by the Coastal Mountains Land Trust. Check out their website to learn more about their efforts to secure public lands.
