Explore the nooks and crannies of this magical coastline with North Star Adventures. Maine has over 3,000 miles of coastline (over 5,000 miles if you include the over 4,500 islands)!

Have you ever wanted to paddle the Maine coast but don’t have the gear, knowledge or paddling partner? North Star Adventures is excited to announce our new program for 2020, Paddle Maine Monday. Experience the tidal changes, biodiversity, marine life and coastal culture every Monday in July and August as we explore a different section of the Maine Coast by sea kayak. Each region has its own unique character and beauty. Known for an exceptional amount of lobster buoys, lighthouses, ship wrecks, beautiful islands, seal colonies, rocky cliffs, sand beaches, and  sea bird populations  Maine is a paddlers dream. We will explore the emerald green waters and remote wild islands. The smell of the ocean, sounds of the waves crashing on the rocks, seals barking, and birds communicating all contribute to a wild and remote experience. Experience coastal Maine the way it is meant to be…wild, beautiful and up close.

Your day will begin at 9:00 am with an overview of the route, safety check and brief instruction. We will paddle to the islands stopping for lunch on one of the many public islands made possible by the Maine Island Trails Association and the Maine Coastal Heritage Trust. As we progress through the weeks instruction will vary from basic stroke refinement to understanding tides and currents, and navigation using the chart and a compass. We will launch at 9:00 am and return by 3:00 pm. We provide, kayaks (both single and tandem), paddles, life jackets, and lunch. You may want to bring your favorite snacks.

Session 1: July 6th – Casco Bay – Launching from Merepoint in Brunswick we have many options for exploring this section of Casco Bay. Wind and tide will determine our destination. The Goslings, Little Birch, Crow, Little French and Whaleboat Island are all possibilities. Sand beaches  on the Goslings and Little Birch allow for swimming and relaxing. Registration

Session 2: July 13th – Boothbay Harbor – The opportunities in the Boothbay region are many. Depending on the weather we may choose to stay among the secluded islands or venture out into more open seas where we can paddle to the tip of the peninsula and check out one of three lighthouses. Registration

Session 3: July 20th – Naskeag Point: Beautiful, almost tropical sandy beaches and blue water await you on this exploration of Naskeag Point.  Peppered with lobster buoys we will experience the Maine lobster industry up close and personal. We will have the opportunity to land on several islands with beautiful sand beaches for lunch and swimming. Registration

Session 4: July 27th – Stockton Springs – Launching from Sandy Point Beach we will paddle past Fort Point light to the rusty sea cliffs of Stockton Springs.  This section of cliff is unique on the Maine Coast. Nowhere else have I experienced such twisted and colorful cliffs.Registration

Session 5: August 3rd – Muscongus Bay – Known for lobster buoys and public islands Muscongus Bay is a destination in its own right. The islands are diverse…some wooded, some nothing more than rock outcroppings and some have beautiful sand beaches. We will spend the day exploring the islands and watching the sea life.Registration

Session 6: August 10th -Acadia National Park –Acadia is one of the most visited National Parks in the country. Escape the crowds and join North Star Adventures as we launch from the quiet side of the park.  We will explore the less traveled harbors of Seal Cove and Pretty March.  Maine islands are a gift. While conifers are the dominate species, rock weed, wildflowers, rocky coastline and occasional sand beaches will lift your spirits and fill your soul. If you have not had the opportunity to experience a Maine island now is the time. Along the way we will be visited by harbor seals, porpoises and a variety of bird life. Registration

Session 7: August 17 – Great Wass Archipelago-  One of my favorite locations to paddle and hike on the coast. Wild, remote islands that are open to the ocean, rocky ledges, cobblestone beaches, and hiking trails along the Great Wass Preserve make this the quintessential Maine adventure.  This is Downeast Maine in all its glory. Step back in time and experience Jonesport, a real working coastal village. We will choose our route carefully depending on tide, wind, and, weather. Registration

Session 8: August 24 -Machias – The farthest north we will travel on our coastal exploration.  Jasper beach with it polished stones, and sea cliffs adorned with petroglyphs (if the tide is right) make paddling in this region a unique experience. Beautiful coastal island with their rugged granite ledges are plentiful.  This is a less traveled section of the Maine coast and a paddlers dream.  Registration
