On Water Medical Scenarios & Emergency Management
June 1 @ 9:00 AM - 4:00 PM$75
North Star Adventures and Castine Kayak Adventures are partnering to offer you a day of medical scenarios and sea kayak emergency strategies and management options on the water.
We offered this course two weeks ago in Casco Bay. It was such a success we decided to tweak it (make it longer) and offer it farther north. If you are a paddler and have a minimum of basic first aid certification then this course is something you will want to check out! This is a great way to dust of the rust and practice those skills you learned when you took your first aid class.
Practice your wilderness medical skills in the environment in which you recreate or work. Strengthen those skills you learned in the classroom setting: treating soft tissue and musculoskeletal injuries, and managing medical and environmental emergencies. Practicing on the water will reinforce the need for good patient care paying attention to environmental hazards. Each person will take a leadership role in managing a scenario. You will be making decisions based on weather, tide, patient condition, location (on the water or on an island), resources, time of day, and condition of the group. Towing an incapacitated person, towing several boats together, stabilizing a boat in wind & waves (to administer medical treatment), recognizing ocean hazards, evacuation techniques and calling for help are all part of managing an emergency on the water…you will have the opportunity to practice these skills in scenario.
This course is designed for those with a current Wilderness First Aid certification or higher.
Course is taught by Nancy Zane, Wilderness EMT, SOLO Instructor, Maine Guide, Instructor of Emergency Medicine at the Waldo County Technical Center and founder of North Star Adventures and Karen Francoeur, WFR, Maine Master Guide, Owner of Castine Kayak Adventures and ukulele player extraordinaire.
