February 22 @ 9:00 AM - March 14 @ 4:00 PM

Embrace the winter with North Star Adventures!

Our winter snowshoeing series starts in February 2020. Book individually or book all four and save!

While Maine winters can be long, the season provides us with a beautiful landscape! Winter is the most peaceful of all seasons. The hustle and bustle of summer is gone and we are left with the stark beauty of the winter wonderland. Wildlife is hibernating, trails are less crowded…experience the silence of winter. Snowflakes and ice crystals make unique and interesting designs as they paint the winter landscape. Our winter snowshoe series is designed to get you out and introduce you to this amazing environment. The winter air is invigorating, you come alive, your senses fill with the energy of a crisp winter day.  After a day of physical activity, the relaxing time in front of the woodstove can feel euphoric.

Week 1: Introduction to Snowshoeing: Saturday February 22, Fernald’s Neck Preserve Loop, Beginner Fernald’s Neck covers most of a peninsula that extends into the north end of Lake Megunticook . This easy four mile hike is a great introduction to snowshoeing. The trail winds through the woods and along the shore line with beautiful views of Maiden Cliff and the Camden Hills. The trail is mostly flat with rolling hills on the western side of the preserve. Registration

Week 2: Saturday February 29, Bald Rock, Camden Maine, Intermediate. A moderate 3.4 mile hike. This is a good introduction to snowshoeing on steeper inclines. The trail rises slowly for the first mile as we follow an old carriage road. From there it is .5 to the summit. There are several short steep sections but nothing long and sustained. At the summit you will be greeted with fantastic views of Penobscot Bay. Enjoy a hot beverage, some snacks, and a cup of soup while gazing upon the winter wonderland. There is a three-sided shelter just below the summit where lunch may be provided. Registration

Week 3 : Saturday March 7, Camden Hills Loop 6 miles, Advanced Intermediate. This six mile moderately strenuous loop takes you through a variety of ecosystems. We will begin at the Maiden Cliff Trail head and follow it to the intersection of the ridge trail. You will experience beautiful views of Lake Megunticook and Penobscot Bay as well as frozen streams and rocky cliffs. We will drop down into a hardwood forest and hike at the base of Mt. Megunticook. Beautiful cliffs and frozen streams are on the menu for this section of the trail The final stretch to the top of Ocean Lookout offers sweeping views of Penobscot bay. Once again we intersect with the Ridge trail and make our way back to the parking lot at Maiden Cliff. Registration

Week 4: Saturday March 14, Ragged Mountain, Advanced Intermediate. Home to Camden Snow Bowl Ragged Mountain is a beautiful 1300’ mountain. The hike up the Georges Highland path is a moderately strenuous five mile loop. Breathtaking views of lakes, mountains and the ocean will fill your senses as you make your way to the summit. Registration
