Leave No Trace Trainer Course
In this time of pandemic and social distancing more and more people are flocking to our parks, trails, lakes, and rivers for physical fitness and mental health.
While I embrace this sudden love of the outdoors, what I hope is that appreciation for the resource becomes paramount. People have been respectful on trail, moving aside when meeting others. But, what I am talking about is understanding human impact and taking steps to lessen the impact of this increase in use.
I am a Master Educator for the Leave No Trace Center for Outdoor Ethics. Leave No Trace was designed to protect our natural lands from overuse. Today that mission is more important than ever.
North Star is offering a 2 day course that will teach you the seven principles of leave no trace, as well as introducing you to the mission of the center. Over the two days we will dissect each of the seven principles. You will be responsible for delivering a 15 minute lesson on one of the principles.
On day one will meet at the Bald Rock trail head in the Camden Hills State Park. On day two will will meet on Sears Island in Searsport Maine. We will be looking at the effects of human impact on both this highly used, but different, environments.
You will need to bring lunch, clothes appropriate for the season, a sense of humor and a love of the natural world. If you are coming from out of the area camping is available at Camden Hills State Park. There are also a variety of hotels in the area.
