Kayak Skills Workshop
Are you a lake paddler that is ready for the ocean, a beginner who wants to learn to paddle, or are you looking to build confidence in your ability to maneuver in tidal waters? This workshop is designed for beginners and those who have some kayaking experience but want to take their skills to the next level.
In this workshop we will concentrate on paddle technique, boat re-entry’s, and basic safety gear. When you learn technique for the perfect paddle stroke you will become less tired, have less muscle soreness and fatigue, and be able to paddle greater distances. We will practice forward and reverse strokes, sweep strokes, braces, and the draw stroke.
After a glorious morning of exploring Unity Pond and practicing our strokes we will learn what safety gear is necessary for the ocean, how to use it, and how to re-enter our boat in the case of a capsize. We will practice T-Rescues and self rescues. T-rescues are for a technique for getting your paddling partner back in their boat. If you find yourself alone on the water knowing how to self-rescue (get yourself back in your boat) can be lifesaving.
Expect to get wet. You will want to bring a change (or two) of clothes, a fleece jacket to put on in case you get cold, water shoes, plenty of drinking water, lunch, sunglasses, sunscreen and a hat.
The course will be held on Unity Pond in Troy Maine. There is plenty of shade and space to social distance.
