Backpacking or Base Camp: Baxter State Park
Backpacking or Base Camp: Baxter State Park

Baxter State Park was the dream of Governor Percival P. Baxter who made it his life’s work to create and protect some of the most beautiful and rugged land in Maine. The Baxter Region offers a variety of hiking and backpacking opportunities. From the storied 100 Mile Wilderness to the Northern Terminus of the Appalachian Trail located on Mt. Katahdin this region is a destination for hikers and backpackers. The northern end of the park is home of the twelve mile Traveler Loop Trail. It crosses three mountain peaks with views of Katahdin, South Branch Pond and Trout Brook.

A base camp experience will take you to Quoddy Head State Park, and several of the smaller coastal preserves for stunning and dramatic hiking along the Maine Coast. One of my favorite hiking and backpacking destinations in Maine. This region, home of some of the most rugged terrain on the Appalachian Trail offers spectacular views and challenging climbs.  For those who want a less strenuous adventure there are plenty of waterfalls and gorges to explore.  A minimum of three days is required for this trip. If you want a more relaxed excursion or a longer trip we will work with you to design your custom adventure.

Base Camp: Caribou Speckled Wilderness

This part of the White Mountain National Forest is located entirely in Maine. The Caribou Speckled Wilderness boasts emerald green dipping pools, moss covered rocks, and peaks covered in wild Maine blueberries. The highest peak in the Wilderness area is Speckled Mountain at 2,906′. While not significant elevation the peaks in this region are a “bang for your buck” with spectacular views of the Presidential range in New Hampshire. We will spend our days hiking, swimming, and enjoying one of Maine’s less traveled regions.
