Baxter State Park was the dream of Governor Percival P. Baxter who made it his life’s work to create and protect some of the most beautiful and rugged land in Maine. The Baxter Region offers a variety of hiking and backpacking opportunities. From the storied 100 Mile Wilderness to the Northern Terminus of the Appalachian Trail located on Mt. Katahdin this region is a destination for hikers and backpackers. The northern end of the park is home of the twelve mile Traveler Loop Trail. It crosses three mountain peaks with views of Katahdin, South Branch Pond and Trout Brook.

Down East is home to Maine’s most spectacular coastline.  A backpacking trip on the Bold Coast will leave you in awe. You will hike through blueberry barrens, woodlands, peat lands, and 4.5 miles of coastline with pocket coves and cobble beaches that overlook the Bay of Fundy. A base camp experience will take you to Quoddy Head State Park, and several of the smaller coastal preserves for stunning and dramatic hiking along the Maine Coast. We may even pay a visit to Eastport Maine, the most easterly town in the US or the famous Monica’s Chocolates for some incredible locally made treats!

This region, home of some of the most rugged terrain on the Appalachian Trail offers spectacular views and challenging climbs.  For those who want a less strenuous adventure there are plenty of waterfalls and gorges to explore.  A minimum of three days is required for this trip. Located in the Mid-Coast region Camden Hills State Park is home of some of the most beautiful moderate hiking in the state. Hikes vary in length from two – ten miles. With views of Penobscot Bay, Lake Megunticook, and the Western Mountains you would be hard pressed to find a more diverse hiking location.  We will be camping at the State Park and spending the days hiking, and swimming. If you want to make this a multi-sport adventure we can add canoeing or sea kayaking.

This part of the White Mountain National Forest is located entirely in Maine. The Caribou Speckled Wilderness boasts emerald green dipping pools, moss covered rocks, and peaks covered in wild Maine blueberries. The highest peak in the Wilderness area is Speckled Mountain at 2,906′. While not significant elevation the peaks in this region are a “bang for your buck” with spectacular views of the Presidential range in New Hampshire. We will spend our days hiking, swimming, and enjoying one of Maine’s less traveled regions.

This adventure may include paddling on Webb Lake as well as hiking Tumbledown Mountain, Parkman Mountain, or any of the surrounding peaks.  There are some spectacular loop hikes in the region. Their rugged landscape and sweeping views will leave you in awe. If you are up for an extra challenge a hike up the Loop Trail will have you maneuvering on metal rungs through a rock chimney. For those who don’t mind cold water a dip the lake on Tumbledown Mountain will invigorate and energize.

Launching from Sandy Point Beach we will paddle to Fort Point State Park. Here we can enjoy a relaxing break on the sandy beach, swim, and take a walk up to the lighthouse (it is a private residence so we cannot go inside).  Past the lighthouse the unique twisted and rusty coastline of begins. This section of cliff is unique on the Maine Coast. Nowhere else have I experienced such twisted and colorful cliffs. Rusty orange, and yellow mixed with bright green sea lettuce is a feast for the eyes. The rocks twist and turn in some places looking almost serpent like.

The farthest north we will travel on our coastal exploration.  Jasper beach with its polished stones, and sea cliffs adorned with petroglyphs (if the tide is right) make paddling in this region a unique experience. Beautiful coastal islands with their rugged granite ledges and sea caves are plentiful.  This is a less traveled section of the Maine coast and a paddlers dream.  Due to travel the fee for this trip is slightly higher.

Hiking in the dark heightens your sense of hearing. You become more aware of the sounds and smells that surround you. If you have never done a night hike this is a perfect beginning. It is a moderate 1.5 mile hike to the top of Bald Rock. Once on top we point out the summer constellations , satellites, and, if we are lucky, we may seen meteors. Departure times vary due to the time of sunset.
